Frequently Asked Questions

Things you'd like to know but were afraid to ask.

Who can become members?

Anyone interested in learning about computers is welcome to join!

Can I attend even if I don't know much about computers?

Yes, there are a number of people who come to NIPCC with very little or no knowledge of computers. There is a wide range of abilities, from total beginners to professionals. Our goal is to help and inspire each other.

How do I become a member?

Just attend the meetings. The first two meetings are free then it is necessary to subscribe. Inform us also of your email address to receive meeting announcements.

What are the benefits of being a member?

Members have access to a lot of information presented at the monthly meetings. There are discussions of the latest computer innovations, internet policies, and a wide range of topics. Also, there is a great opportunity to network, to exchange ideas, give and/or receive assistance, and the possibility of new friendships. In short, being a member is technically, socially, arguably, existentially rewarding. :)

Are there any membership fees?

You bet! Club dues cost only 3,000 yen per year (tax free!:) ).

Where do the membership fees go?

Membership fees go to pay for the NIPCC website, the NIPCC telephone (090-2924-1455), society subscriptions and the building of a club computer.

Can I refund my membership fee if I can not attend the meetings anymore?

No, we spend it as soon as we get it :). Seriously, we believe that the benefits of being a member makes the club dues already unreasonably cheap!

I'd like to attend the meetings but I'm not available on Saturdays. Is there any other day that we can meet?

So far, the 3rd Saturday of every month has been the most convenient day for the majority of members. Hence, at the moment, the answer is "NO", though it is conceivable this day could change if the majority of members approve it.

What is a typical meeting like?

See meeting schedule on the NIPCC homepage. At 12 noon people begin arriving for networking and coffee/tea is available. At 12:30 the presentations begin. Usually one or two speakers present information on the topic of the day (see our web site for past topics). Presentations are informal, attendees can ask questions and often a discussion ensues as members share their knowledge and experiences. Attendance usually ranges from 12 to 26 people.

Can I attendance even if my English is not fluency :) ?

Yes. Always have happy joy good feeling member. :)

Kidding aside, many members are not native English speakers though the meetings are conducted in English. Nagoya International PC Club has members from all over the world. Of course, a good level of English is useful for understanding the content of the meetings.

Do I have to participate in the discussions?

Your level of participation is entirely up to you. You may be asked to introduce yourself. Shy people are also welcome.

I'm a computer whiz and I'd like to do a presentation - is it possible?

It would be encouraged. We are always looking for new people to speak. Bring your idea (topic) to any of the executive members. Often we decide topics in advance but anyone is welcome to speak.

I want to sell my computer - can I advertise it through the club?

Yes, you may tell people at the meetings, or post an ad on the bulletin board where we meet. In the near future we may have a place on our website to sell things.

Can I have my computer fixed?

It really depends on what the particular problem is. You can receive information on how to fix your computer or referrals to competent repair people. If you bring your pc to the meeting you might find people to help you with it during the networking time or after the meeting is over. So, just show up in our meetings and let's try fixing it together!

How much money do the executives get every month from the club?

Guess how much? Zero. The executives are all volunteers. : )
